Legislative Affairs Committee

Legislative Affairs Committee monitors, studies and recommends policy direction and advocacy strategies on legislative and regulatory matters that affect the office building industry.

Through the combined efforts of BOMA Kansas City and BOMA International, the interests of members are kept in front of legislators and regulators at the local, state and federal levels, when they are introducing changes that could mean unwarranted costs to the office building industry and the companies that make it up.

BOMA Kansas City's  Legislative Affairs Committee is currently monitoring the content and progress of bills introduced in Jefferson City and Topeka relating to mandatory installation of fire sprinklers, electric utility de-regulation, and forced access for telecommunications companies.  It is also involved in the code updating process currently underway in Kansas City, Mo.  The committee also monitors proposed ordinances in the major municipalities within the metropolitan area on both sides of the state line.

BOMA International's government affairs staff has built a strong presence in federal legislative and regulatory circles, and has earned a solid reputation for developing facts and positions of value to legislators and regulators in recognizing and understanding the impact on the office building industry of various environmental, economic, social, and taxation measures that come before Congress and the administrative agencies.  Office building owners have benefited significantly from BOMA International's effectiveness in its legislative, regulatory and industry educational work in such areas as the Americans with Disabilities Act, Indoor Air Quality, the phaseout of CFCs, Telecommunications policy, Energy transmission, OSHAs asbestos regulations.

BOMA International also represents building owners and managers with the various building codes organizations, and is currently supporting efforts to adopt a single, unified code developed with BOMAs input, by three of the major national codes groups.

The Legistlative Affairs Committee is the only committee that does not allow allied members to attend due to a potential conflict of interest.

BOMA Kansas City promotes the highest ethical and professional standards in the commercial real estate industry and supports its members, and the community, through advocacy, networking and education.
